Occupied by Israeli troops in the six day war in 1967, the West Bank and Gaza Strip were administered by Israel until 1994. The Gaza Strip covers only about 386 sq. miles but has a population of almost 600,000 Palestinian Arabs. The West Bank with a land area of 2,278 sq. miles, has a population of 859,000, of whom 97% are Palestinian Arabs. Israeli settlers have encroached on much of the best land.
Both territories rely on agriculture and pay from work in Israel.
Following secret negotiations between Israel and the PLO in 1993, agreement was reached allowing limited autonomy for the Palestinians in Gaza and around the town of Jericho.
